Plans For Homebuilt Wind Power

Leslie Oke asked:

After seeing the price of new generators we started searching out plans for homebuilt power. Homebuilt power plans appealed to us for many reasons besides the obvious savings in dollars.

You can build a wind machine to your own specifications and design it to fit your needs exactly.

What will you need to get started?

? Detailed plans for homebuilt

? Simple tools every home workshop will have

? About 4 days to complete the project

Let’s first deal with how much you will save by building your own since this is one of our own biggest motivators for completing this project.

The 1000 watt wind generator we needed to power our home along with our panels cost in excess of $3100, and we figured we could build the same machine ourselves for under $150. That’s quite a substantial savings and the plans we found showed us how to do it.

Building a machine for under $150, including the cost of the plans may seem a bit ‘out there’ but we have built 3 already and we are certain that anyone can do this.

The real center of the project is the DC motor used as a generator for your system, this item is easily obtained online and you should order it first.

While you are waiting for your DC motor to arrive get started finding a wind tower for yourself. The plans outline where to find free TV towers which we have found work great to get your wind machine up there where the wind blows constantly.

You will need to place your wind machine high enough that it clears every obstruction within 300 feet by at least 15 feet- that is 15 feet higher than all surrounding objects. The TV tower usually fits quite well and they are easy to obtain.

Next, you will want to design the blades. We have found that a wind generator built up to 6 feet in diameter you can use heavy PVC pipe. If you are building a larger machine, and you will need an 8 foot diameter system if you want to produce 1000 watts, you should use wooden blades.

Wooden blades are easy to fashion in about a day and can be made from any reasonably strong wood such as spruce, cedar or hardwood. Remember that you should only use clear, straight grained wood for your blades.

The plans for homebuilt show you the detailed drawings on how to fashion your own blades, so don’t worry that they are too complicated, anyone can do this.

Once you have your tower, DC motor, and blades done, simply fashion a body and tail along with a pilot vane (to help out in very strong winds) and you are ready to set it to flying.

It is a very exciting moment the first time you see your own wind generator start spinning and producing power for your home.

We have built 3 and every time it is a joy to watch it start going. Isn’t it time you got started on your own? We have found the following website very helpful in getting started with more information and homebuilt plans.

Plans For Homebuilt Wind Power are easy to follow and you will have a lot of fun with your family with this project, it is easy to follow and it feels great producing free electricity for your home.
