LED Lights and Their (Many) Benefits

Today’s consumers tend to have the environment at the forefront of their mind when making purchases. While many are willing to pay a bit more to have less impact on Mother Earth., as this trend continues, more and more environmentally friendly options are hitting the market — and some of them can even save you money.

Notably, LED lights might not be the first thing that pops into your head when considering improvements around the house or the office, but they do have several great benefits for both your wallet and the planet.

Shining a Light on Change

Whether you’re remodeling or simply trying to make a few eco-friendly changes around your house, it’s important to turn some attention to your current lighting situation. Considering how often we use our lights, LED options are definitely worth looking into. For one, as Murray Lampert points out, LED lights can lower the overall amount you pay each month in electricity costs and secondly, they can improve the functionality within main rooms of your home such as the kitchen, dining room, and living room. For example, LED lights are small and directional, meaning they are ideal for lighting countertops — which comes in handy when cooking and reading recipes. They can also improve that nook in your living room, making it the perfect spot to sit down and catch up on your reading list.

Furthermore, due to their thermal management design, LED lights won’t overheat or burnout (instead they slowly dim over time). LEDs are unique in how they emit light, which is actually more important than you would think, especially in terms of reducing your footprint on the planet.

As Star explains, “LEDs are ‘directional’ light sources, which means they emit light in a specific direction, unlike incandescent and CFL, which emit light and heat in all directions. That means LEDs are able to use light and more efficiently in a multitude of applications.” In the same realm of actively using only what you need, LED lights can provide great, but efficient lighting almost anywhere.

Beyond Functionality

Beyond their eco-friendly perks, interesting enough, LED lights are being used outside the home as well. These days, LED lights are being utilized by film crews in the entertainment industry. Part of their appeal to filmmakers is that useful thermal management design — and they’re cheap! While you might not be part of a renowned Hollywood film crew (yet), borrowing from the experts can help you achieve simple, effective video and photography lighting.

Consider the selfies you enjoy taking around your house — LED lights can give you that trendy, softer look in each of your photos due to their light distribution. Moreover, LEDs won’t wash out colors like fluorescent lights do. They are also like the chameleons of the light industry, able to produce different colors for a variety of purposes and environments.

While selfies might sound like a silly reason to convert to LED lights, think about all the photos you’ve taken around the house this past year. Whether it’s selfies, a family portrait, or the most amazing photo of your dog sawing logs, LED lights can help you capture that perfect photo while still providing all those other eco-friendly benefits.

Whatever your reasons may be, it’s clear why LEDs are a fantastic option to include in your home for both functional and fun purposes. It’s a simple change that can do a lot of good, particularly when it comes to the environment.
