Kryptonite Found on Earth! Could we use it for energy?

OK so maybe that headline is off, but they did find a new mineral that very much resembles the makeup of [tag-tec]Superman’s [/tag-tec]nemesis Kryptonite.

Researchers working in Serbia unearthed a new mineral that comes very close to the chemical makeup of the glowing green crystal described in the Superman returns movie of years back. However the mineral is actually white in color and does not glow green like the Hollywood version.

Did you know that they find new [tag-ice]minerals [/tag-ice]every year as they dig in the earth all over the globe?

Instead, it will be formally named Jadarite when it is described in the European Journal of Mineralogy later this year.

Jadar is the name of the place where the Serbian mine is located.

Dr Stanley said that if deposits occurred in sufficient quantity it could have some commercial value.

It contains boron and lithium – two valuable elements with many applications, he explained.

“Borosilicate glasses are used to encapsulate processed radioactive waste, and lithium is used in batteries and in the pharmaceutical industries.”

There will be no sapping of Superman’s powers but there is a new mineral in town. The mineral is so small that each individual crystal is less than five microns across.
