    Different Classes Of HGV Driver

    There are two major classes of HGV licenses, class C and class C+E, a person who is licensed to drive a class C HGV vehicle can legally drive a rigid vehicle with a weight of over 7.5 tonnes. A person who holds a class C+E HGV is legally allowed to drive a large goods vehicle with an articulated trailer (artics). In order to train for a class C+E license a person must already hold the class C LGV license, and a standard full UK car license is required before you can begin any LGV training. Persons training for class C must be over 18 years of age and persons training for C+E must be over 21, additionally a medical examination and eye test must be passed to show that you are healthy enough to be in charge of such a vehicle.     HGV Driver Training

    The HGV test is in many ways very alike to a ordinary driving test, there is the same two part approach where candidates must pass both a practical exam and a theory test in order to become licensed. The theory test is very simular to the one which you wil have sat for your car license and features a hazard perception test where candidates must click when they see an imminent hazard, the only differentiation is that this hazard perception test is geared towards HGV drivers and therefore something that may not be a danger to a car driver would represent a real threat to a HGV driver because of the size of vehicle being driven, things like low bridges for example can usually be ignored by a car driver. The practical test involves demonstrating your ability to control a HGV in a multitude of different situations and manouvres. Some of the test is done off road to test your ability to reverse the vehicle in confined areas etc, and some of the test is done on road. Candidates must score fifty or over out of seventy five for the theory test in order to pass and pass the practical test in order to become a qualified HGV driver.

    Driver CPC Training

    The requisite for HGV drivers to undertake driver CPC training (certificate of professional competence) became law in the UK in september 2009, It was introduced as a method of ensuring that HGV drivers develop their skills and become more proficient and knowledgable as their career progresses. Driver CPC training has a duration of five days and in addition refresher courses which consist of a further five days driver cpc training must be undertaken every five years in order for a HGV driver to remain authorized to drive commercially.

  • Toyota’s Creates a Solar Powered Car



    One of the most popular Hybrid cars on the market is the Toyota Prius. It is both compact and economical, with a starting price of just $22,400. This price puts the Prius within the realms of possibility for the everyday, although environmentally-conscious, individual.

    The third generation of Toyota Prius, the 2010 model, has EPA ratings of 51 mpg city, and 49 mpg highway. That’s pretty good even for a hybrid, and it’s a step up from earlier Toyota Prius models.

    But now, a new pricing structure is lined up for this hybrid. The Toyota Prius I, II, III, IV, and V are reportedly already available.

    The lowest-prices model is the Toyota Prius I, which should run for around $21,000, while the Prius V starts at $27,670.

    It gets better though. A solar roof package is available for the Toyota Prius II, III, and IV Models – but not for the V.

    The solar roof costs between $3,600 and $4,500. It uses solar panels to supplement the vehicle’s power and to get even better mileage. This package also includes a solar-powered ventilation system, a navigation system, a power tilt/slide moon roof, and remote-control AC (for those of us who just can’t be bothered to lean forward and turn the knob?)

    With the combination of hybrid technology and solar power, a whole new range of fuel efficiency may be well within grasp. The solar powered version is said to make mileages of up to 70 miles per gallon possible, under the right circumstances.

    If you live in or often drive through a sunny climate, a solar-powered roof might go a long ways in reducing your gas bill and carbon emissions.

    Under some (somewhat theoretical) circumstances, the driver of a solar-powered Toyota Prius might never need to buy gas at all.

    But minimally, a driver of a solar powered Prius who uses the vehicle’s “eco” settings and follows basic speed guidelines can expect to stop for gasoline far less often – so infrequently, in fact, that he should take care not to forget to stop for gas at all.

  • The Solar Car



    A solar car is a vehicle, powered by electricity instead of fuel, which runs on solar energy obtained from the solar panels on its surface. The solar panels are often found on the roof of the vehicle.

    This type of vehicle is not entirely practical as of this moment, for obvious reasons. It needs to harness the power of the sun in order to operate. Without sunlight, the vehicle runs on the reserve power which is stored in its batteries.

    Photovoltaic cells convert the sun’s energy into electricity, and this electricity runs the vehicle. That’s why solar cars are limited by the energy input from the sun, their main source of energy. This type of vehicle is usually manufactured for participation in solar car races.

    Just like a typical race car, a solar race car has just enough room for the driver, although there are some designs that include room for a navigator. It does have several features similar to a normal car, such as an accelerator, a brake, rear view mirrors on the camera, and ventilation. It would also have a radio which would be used by the driver, so that he can communicate with his support crew.

    The Electrical System

    Probably the most important component of a solar car is its electrical system. The electrical system controls all the power that comes in and out of the car. It doesn’t have a gas tank, but its battery essentially functions as one. The battery stores energy produced by the PV cells. There’s a wide range of batteries to choose from. The most common are lead-acid batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries (NiCd), nickel-metal hydride batteries (NiMH), lithium polymer batteries, and lithium-ion batteries. Most solar cars have gauges which monitor the entire electrical system. Among the things that one keeps an eye on, are the battery voltage, and the current.

    The Design

    The mechanical design of a solar car prioritizes on keeping friction and weight to a minimum, while maintaining sufficient strength so that it doesn’t disintegrate. These vehicles are usually made out of titanium or similar composites, which makes for a good strength-to-weight ratio.

    Commercially Available Hybrids

    Hybrid cars using solar power are commercially available, in limited quantities. The Toyota Prius is said to be able to generate up to 240 watts of electric power from its solar cells. That results in a 15 km drive, on a sunny day.

    One practical application for the solar car would be to use its technology for golf carts, which are lightweight, are mainly used during the day, and are usually parked under the sun.

  • What is Biodiesel?



    Oil and its alternatives, such as biodiesel, are continuously in the news. When oil prices go up, it seems that everyone is affected. Many countries’ economies depend on oil. And this is one reason why people are looking for a cleaner and cheaper alternatives to our conventional fossil fuels.

    One of these alternative forms of energy is biodiesel.

    What is Biodiesel?

    Technically speaking, biodiesel is a biodegradable and renewable diesel fuel, which is made from plant oils or from animal fats. Which material is used depends on which production method is used, as well as on which type of fuel is to be made. This type of fuel consists of a form of natural hydrocarbon which contains little sulfur content, thus helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from diesel engines.

    Biodiesel can be used in a pure form, or can be blended with other petroleum products. It is safe for use even on unmodified diesel engines.

    Blends of biodiesel are known with the designation Bxx, where xx is the percentage of biodiesel in the mix. In pure form, it would be referred to as B100. Because it comes from animals and plants, its sources can be recycled or farmed. It also has no known harmful side effects.

    More people using biodiesel means cleaner air. Additionally, it helps lubricate the engine, therefore decreasing wear and tear. Biodiesel creates fewer emissions, is biodegradable, and is a renewable form of energy as well.

    One downside of this type of fuel is that its use can lead to the degradation of a vehicle’s natural rubber gaskets. This is the case for vehicles made before 1992. Their hoses do tend to deteriorate over time, and some have since been replaced by FKM (a material that doesn’t react with biodiesel). It is common for fuel filters to become clogged after the transition has been made. Therefore, it’s recommended that these parts be replaced.

    Biodiesel in Everyday Lives

    Biodiesel has been accepted for use worldwide. Most fuel stations around the globe have biodiesel pumps ready for their consumers. Diesel engines can use biodiesel without any changes being made in the engine.

    There is even a train which runs on 20% biodiesel.

    Controversy

    The public acceptance of biodiesel has led to an increase in its production. Because of this, issues have also been raised in regards to food or feed being used to create fuel. There are reports of food shortages in some regions of the world, as a result of food sources being diverted and used for the production of biodiesel.

    While biodiesel could be a good alternative energy solution, I think we can all agree that its use should definitely not cause anyone to go hungry. Any long-term strategy which implements biodiesel as an alternative energy source should also include measures to ensure that necessary food supplies are not diminished or made less accessible as a result.
